The front area features a Japanese tsukubai — a water fountain — that splashes onto the natural stone below. The natural sound is a trigger to take a deep breath and step away from the harshness of the outside world. A mosaic made out of natural, hand-cut stone accents the slate walkway leading up to the house.
The backyard is another oasis. Japanese red maple provides shade and a pop of color against the green of the garden. As you walk among the the natural greenery and stepping stones, the repetitive sound of the shishi odoshi — traditionally built to scare away deer and other animals from crops — and the burble of water help to focus the mind into a peaceful Zen state.
